Cepheid's (CPHD) test that can positively identify the H1N1 virus in less than one hour was given approval by the Food and Drug administration on Monday.
The test is for emergency-use only, for "moderate-complexity" testing.
Cepheid, a maker of medical-diagnostic products, has been working to expand its flu tests to include seasonal flu along with swine flu, and has said it will seek an expedited review from the FDA for the test later this year.
The emergency-use approval for the H1N1 vaccine is valid until April 26.
Shares of Cepheid were up 0.3% to $12.51.
